McCartney, Stella

   b. 1971
   Fashion designer
Stella McCartney is a graduate of Central St Martin’s College, and is one of the latest wave of young British fashion talents. She was appointed Chloé’s new head designer in April 1997, after the departure of Karl Lagerfield. The youngest child of Paul and Linda McCartney (which suggests the roots of her refusal to use fur or leather in her collections) and close friend of model Kate Moss (who, with Naomi Campbell, appeared in her graduation show), she is well connected, and had developed only three commercial collections before landing the Chloé position. To date, she has been notable for her drawing from men’s tailoring and for the design of slip dresses, lingerie tops, ribbon ties, long and drawstring skirts. She has worked for Christian Lacroix, Vogue, and the designer Betty Jackson. Under her own label she supplied the London store Tokio and Bergdorf-Goodman.
